The Housing and Building Association of Colorado Springs (CSHBA) hosts an annual Holiday Party and HBA Cares is given the opportunity to raise funds for our mission of "Connecting community needs to the skills and abilities of the Housing and Building Industry."
HBA Cares received their Raffle License in October and is very excited to be able to raise awareness and funds for our mission.
The CSHBA Holiday Party was HBA Cares’ first opportunity to use the Raffle License and it was a huge success.
We ran a 50/50 raffle, selling 100 chances at $20 each in less than two hours. There was tremendous excitement in the room as the winner of the raffle would walk away with a cool $1000 prize!
Vince Crowell of Garden of the Gods Bank was the winner of the $1,000 prize, and he immediately donated $500 back to HBA Cares. Congrats and a huge Thank You for the Donation go out to Vince!
The 2010 Annual Colorado Springs Housing and Building Association's Rally/Poker Ride to Breckenridge on July 17, 2010 was a great success! People were on Bikes and even in Cars. Some came by themselves, with passengers and even families. The weather was beautiful and it was a great day to go out to play.
Participants collected poker cards to have the best hand and to win the prize. Cards were handed out at the following stops (sponsors in parentheses):

The Colorado Springs Housing and Building Association sold extra poker cards to riders in Breckenridge. HBA Cares received a donation of $355 raised by that sale to support the "Keeping Seniors in their homes longer" program.
HBA Cares also conducted a Cornhole Tournament at the final stop in Breckenridge. The tournament raised $480. The winners of the tournament – Dena Cordova of Foxworth Galbraith and Rob Jasinski of Westech Framing – were challenged to a one game contest. The challengers – Brad Foster of Foster Electric Corp. and Tom Brown (company unknown) – made a $100 donation to HBA Cares on the condition that the tournament winners would match it if they were beaten. The winners agreed to match the donation regardless of the outcome. The challengers won the challenge.
On April 30th, May 1st and 2nd, members of the HBA Cares Board volunteered with Homes for Our Troops to help build a home for LCpl Kade Hinkhouse and his wife.
There were tons of people who showed up to do whatever was needed, contractors who helped build the house, the Boy Scouts who cooked lunch and many more who gave their time for this great event.
Although the weather brought all 3-4 seasons (since we live in Colorado, this is just an every day thing for us), Snow, Rain, Wind, Sun... The spirits were high and everyone chipped in where ever needed.

experience in Downtown Colorado Springs!
The event will be held at The Fine Arts Center
Colorado Springs, CO (March 25, 2010) Trucks loaded with bright red-enameled
children’s bookcases are making deliveries to three area hospitals, seven local
pediatrician offices, as well as eight early learning centers as part of the community-wide
“Brainy Bunch” literacy effort.
The bookcases, built by members of HBA Cares- a non-profit organization founded by
the housing and building industry – with materials donated by Ron Holladay
of Holladay Brothers Construction, will contain an ongoing supply of books for children
age birth to five. The goal of the project, spearheaded by Pikes Peak United Way: to put
books in the hands of children, encouraging reading and increasing literacy levels.
With 1 in 4 third graders in Colorado Springs unable to read at grade level, as stated in
the Quality of Life Indicators report published last September, reading to and with
children from birth to 5 years of age, when 85% of the brain is being formed, strengthens
their memory, expands their vocabulary and helps them understand the world around
them, enabling them to succeed in school – and in life.

Many attendees at the International Builder Show came back talking about the effort by Homes for Our Troops, a Massachusetts non-profit, to build homes for disabled veterans across the country. HBA Cares took a hard look at the program to see how we could participate and, by our participation, allow you the opportunity to participate as well.
The upshot is that Homes for Our Troops has a highly developed formula for selecting veterans and constructing the homes. The opportunity for us to assist their efforts is limited to either a project they select in our local area or the Builder Brigade (a three-day effort to go from foundation to a weather-tight shell) in a neighboring community.
There are no projects currently scheduled in El Paso County, but there is one in Elizabeth, CO to build a home for Lance Corporal Kade Hinkhouse. Homes for Our Troops announced late last week that the Builder Brigade weekend is scheduled for April 16-18 and they are looking for volunteers to help with construction and general support and are soliciting donations of building materials and cash to support the effort.

March 23, 2010, the Colorado Springs HBA All Stars took on the Denver HBF All Stars in a friendly game of Hockey. The puck dropped at 5:30pm and the teams were on their way. Who would win the opportunity to take home Lord Stanley's Cup? Denver proved to be a great team to play, they won 5 - 4. Congratulations to the Denver HBF.
Plans are already in the works to have a rematch in Denver next year. Stay tuned for details.

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the HBA All Stars will be taking on the Denver All Stars in their Annual Hockey Game to defend Lord Stanley's Cup. The game will be played at the Sertich Ice Arena located at Memorial Park (1705 Pikes Peak Ave).
The puck will drop at 5:15pm - 6:15pm. This game is open to the public. It is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Cost of the game:
$5 for adults. Kids 16 and under are FREE.
We will have a goal shooting competition with prizes for the kids at halftime. Bring your kiddos and give them a chance to win one of 10 $5 Target Gift Cards.
